Scanner - The luminous past; That's Okay; Underwater

The pieces Scanner proposed for Safina Radio Project – The Luminous Past, That’s OK and Underwater – all resonate with ideas of memory and surveillance. The recordings of the voices originate from capturing the indiscriminate radio signals that float around us in the ether all the time. "I use a radio scanner to scan through the cellular airwaves in real time and pick up private conversations and exchanges between people, incorporating them into these cinematic dark soundscapes. Though mostly created in the early 1990s these works brought into focus issues of privacy and the dichotomy between the public and the private spectrum, long before we were considering these as today with social networks and the net. In many ways my works are always about mapping the city, weaving stories for the listener and viewers, capturing perfect moments in time." Scanner
