Ian Alden Russell
Ian Alden Russell is a curator and educator working in Hong Kong, Ireland, Turkey, and the United States. His curatorial practice and critical writings address archaeological theory, archival practice, historical memory, identity politics, institutional discrimination, labor economies, new media art, political ecology, and socially engaged art practice.
His curatorial and education work has been hosted by Artpace in San Antonio, Texas, Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, CREATE in Dublin, Ireland, the Green On Red Gallery in Dublin, Ireland, Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey, Ormston House in Limerick, Ireland, the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Ireland, the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre in Hong Kong, the Museum of Innocence in Istanbul, Turkey, the National College of Art & Design in Dublin, Ireland, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and Sculpture in the Parklands in Offaly, Ireland.
His books and essays on contemporary art and heritage have been published by Ashgate, Brown University, Cambridge University Press, Cittadellarte, deCordova Museum & Sculpture Park, Lars Muller Publishers, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Oxford University Press, Routledge, Springer-Kluwer, University of Chicago Press, and Yapı Kredi Publishers.
He has been a guest critic at Brown University, Bryn Mawr College, and the Rhode Island School of Design, and he has spoken at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Columbia University, Contemporary Istanbul, Fudan University in Shanghai, China, the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Harvard University, New York University, Stanford University, the University of Cambridge, and the University of Shanghai.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, he holds a Ph.D in History from Trinity College Dublin and has held fellowships at Brown University, University of Notre Dame, and University College Dublin.
